Tongues evidence, sometimes yes, sometimes no
Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
‘Jeffersonville theology’ tended to differ from that of on-the-road theology while courting Pentecostal contributors at large. William Branham’s teaching is like a deep, dark thicket. It calls for a continual effort to try to untangle statements that contradict themselves and the Bible, changing from year to year and from town to town, leaving a spiritual and perceptive mind strained and vexed. Consider these statements wherein he contends that tongues is the not the evidence, and also that tongues is the evidence:
“.. if they had never started that dogma of “initial evidence: speaking in tongues.” They know that's wrong. It won't hold water. Certainly won't. I can prove to you by God's Bible that you don't receive the Holy Ghost by speaking with tongues.” 58-0928M JEFFERSONVILLE.IN
“Luther organized upon, “The just shall live by faith.” John Wesley organized, “Sanctification, second definite work of grace.” The Pentecost organized on, “Speaking in tongues, as the evidence of the Holy Ghost.” All those things are true.” 1959-1004E CLARKSVILLE.IN
“I do not believe that speaking in tongues is any evidence of the Holy Ghost.” 1961-0112 - JEFFERSONVILLE.IN
“Now, when we stop on one evidence of speaking in tongues being the Holy Ghost, which is all right. That's true. That's the evidence of the Holy Ghost, but just look at the other things goes in there. See, don't organize off on your evidence of the Holy Ghost—which is all right, I believe it, too.” 1961-0129 PHOENIX.AZ
“I believe that when you get so full of the Holy Ghost…you…you…The Bible said, “Stammering lips and other tongues will I speak to this people.” Stammering—so full of the Holy Ghost you can't say nothing in your own language. That's when you're filled with the Holy Ghost.” 61-0318 MIDDLETOWN.OH
“I've never believed.. that the initial evidence of the Holy Ghost is speaking in tongues.” 1962-0318 JEFFERSONVILLE.IN
